Brewery Modernization Act

The end of the Alabama state legislation session is almost here but tomorrow the Brewery Modernization Act is on the schedule to be voted on. If you remember back to past posts, this bill was part of the controversary surrounding the boycott that ended at the beginning of this month. There is a good article here about the process tomorrow if you would like to know more. Also, Birmingham News has a article about the bill which tries to loosen the restrictions on brewpubs and allows tap rooms at breweries. As always, please contact your representative and let them know how you stand on this legislation.

Update: The Brewery Modernization Act has passed the house and will go back to the Senate for concurrence before going on to the governor.

Update 2: The Brewery Modernization Act has now passed concurrence in the Senate and is on the way to the governor.

Alabama Beer Day

To help celebrate the end of of American Craft Beer Week, The Nook will be hosting an Alabama Beer Day event featuring beer from all of the current Alabama breweries. Brewery representatives from Back Forty, Blue Pants, Good People, Straight to Ale, and Yellowhammer will be there. The event starts at noon where they will be serving up some special beers and there should be some swag available as well.

Do you have some artistic talent and want to help out some local businesses? Check out this post for how you can help Liquor Express with their logo. Or, check out this post on how you can help Straight to Ale come up with a new t-shirt design.

All Good Things Must Come to an End

I just got back from the brewfest and what a night! It was awesome seeing so many people come out and try all of the great beer over the past two nights. To me it seemed that the busiest tents were the three local breweries which it is great to see everyone supporting them. I hope everyone had a great time and got to try something they have never had before, I know I did.

For those of you who saw our add in the 2011 Rocket City Brewfest pocket guide, thanks for stopping by. I hope that you keep coming back to our site so you can find out what's going on around Huntsville with craft beer. Upcoming for HuntsvilleBeer.com is an interview with "Below the Radar" brewery which is starting up. Also, don't forget that next week is American Craft Beer Week with a lot of events going on.

In between helping out at the festival I tried to grab a few pictures:

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and the festival is now over. However it is never to early to start waiting for next year, right?

Happy National Homebrew Day!

I would like to wish all of the homebrewers out there a happy National Homebrew Day. National Homebrew Day is a day to celebrate the hobby and art of brewing your own beer at home. It is a time to get together with others who brew beer and also show others who do not currently brew, the craft of homebrewing. Unfortunately the homebrewers in Alabama are not able to be apart of this national celebration.  The bill that legislators brought forth in the house this year to legalize homebrewing in Alabama was voted down once again.  A reporter down in Mobile, AL wrote a good article entitled “Debunking some of the homebrewing myths”, which discusses some of the arguments brought out in the debate of the homebrew bill.  Hopefully some of the information in this article will shed light on the debate and allow the next attempt at legalizing homebrew a success.

One week till the brewfest!

One week from today, Free the Hops will host their annual Rocket City Brewfest here in Huntsville, AL.  Brewfests are a great way to try a lot of different beers at the same time and meet some of the local brewers.  There will be some special releases and previews this year from some of the local breweries.  Blue Pants Brewery recently posted about what specials they are planning on having:

Lederhosen Dunkelweizen: a 5% ABV Dark Wheat beer brewed with German Malts and Hops
Double Cord Double IPA: a 12% ABV Double Strength version of our Corduroy Rye IPA
Carpenter Pale Ale: a 5.5% ABV crisp Pale Ale with an interesting dry hop taste
Straight to Ale also plans on having on tap:
He Aint Hefe*
Monkey's Uncle
Yellowhammer Brewing is planning on serving:
UberAlt (Sticke Alt)
Dark Hammer Belgian Quad

Hoppelganger IPA
There will be other special releases also available from non-local breweries and you can find out more on the Rocket City Brewfest website.  Tickets are still available which you can purchase online or at a few local retailers.  For those of you who don't know yet if you can make it, you can always purchase them at the gate on Friday or Saturday.  Hope to see a bunch of you there!

Boycott Halted

Just a little bit ago Free the Hops issued an announcement calling for a "cease fire" to the boycott of beers distributed by a few particular distributors. The announcement states that Free the Hops has talked with Doug Bailey about Anheuser-Busch and it's distributors.  These talks have apparently convinced Free the Hops they are not against their current legislation even though they have received reports to the contrary.  With the lifting of the ban, this should enable these beers to be available at the upcoming brewfest.  Specifically there has been talk of buying Back Forty Beer through out the week in response to the "cease fire".  I will continue to update this post if we hear more.

Everyone across Alabama and the surrounding states has been affected by the recent storms and tornados that have ripped through the area. I'm sure that everyone knows someone affected by what has happend and are helping out your family, friends, and neighbors.  If your still looking for ways to help out the communities affected please read this article from the Huntsville Times with details on whom you may contact.

Recently when up in Louisville, KY I saw this brew from Bluegrass Brewing Company that commemorates the 315 people who lost their lives in the storms throughout the midwest on April 3, 1974.  I thought this beer would also be appropriate to commemorate those who lost their lives in our area on April 30, 2011.  Our prayers will continue to be with those who have been affected by this terrible tragedy.
